Who is Farid

Farid Mehralizada is a renowned economist, civil society figure and current political prisoner. He worked as an economy analyst for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Azerbaijani service and contributed to multiple platforms, including Baku Research Institute. He regularly provided sharp commentaries on the socio-economic situation in Azerbaijan for independent media despite the country’s growing government censorship. Mehralizada’s analyses, critical of Azerbaijan’s policies on social welfare, education and climate, led to his arrest on political grounds. He was detained on 30 May 2024 amid the ongoing crackdown on critical voices, independent media and NGOs in Baku.
